The Rebellion Will Be Televised
Tonight at midnight, The Hanslick Rebellion's appearance on legendary Manhattan cable show Checkerboard Kids will be broadcast on the Manhattan Neighborhood Network. MNN can be found on channel 34 in New York City; a real-time stream from the MNN website allows surfers anywhere to watch the show as it airs.
Checkerboard Kids has long been a late-night beacon for ska, punk and indie comic lovers. As Rebellion keyboardist Jed Davis says, "I first saw Checkerboard Kids almost a decade ago and became an instant fan. How could we not jump at the chance to play, to hang out with Phil Esquire and the Masked Mutant?"
"I was definitely nervous about how our live show would translate to a taped performance," says bassist Mike Keaney. "So much of what we do is about inciting a riot. Though not impossible it becomes increasingly more difficult with fewer people in the room. In true Rebellion style we rocked the fuck out of that place. We broke something in the control room, one of the cameras started smoking and I'm pretty sure I was probed with something."
The band expected to play four or five songs, tops. "I was all messed up from a severe pneumonia; singing was next to impossible and just about any movement was painful," says Davis. "I figured I could make it through a couple of songs okay, like the rest would be an interview or some skits. But after a few songs, they demanded more rockin, less talkin! We ended up doing a whole set. Thank god for adrenaline, that's all I can say."
Keaney adds: "After the fifth song, Phil Esquire yelled at us to do more. The seventh song meant they had to change tape. We hit the ninth and things started overheating. Finally, on the twelfth track, the studio was closing down and we had to quit. Now that's a good night.
"We wanted to do multiple takes; make sure everything was perfect. When we asked if we could, our hosts delivered a resounding 'No! Keep Going! Don't Stop!' More was the order of the day."
The band was pleased with the results. Said Keaney as he watched the playback: "I'd fuck me."
The performance is yours to treasure at midnight! In the meantime, here's a clip that didn't make the final half-hour cut, courtesy of Phil Esquire: "Big Hot Monday"!
