2007.
I got mugged the other day. In broad daylight, middle of a weekday on a busy street. A dude cracked me over the head with a backpack full of books then and grabbed my iPhone. Long story short, I tackled the fucker - he managed to escape with the phone but I got his coat and backpack. The backpack contained all his info and even his housekeys. Needless to say, this fellow ceased to be a free man not long after the attack. Crime does not pay, children!
A satisfying conclusion, but really unpleasant and unnecessarily difficult getting there: sums up my 2007 in so many regards. Particularly in the realm of music-making. It seems like everything related to the creation of quality, high-fidelity recordings becomes more complicated and stressful as homemade garbage becomes the acceptable norm. But every time we manage to buck the GarageBand (GarbageBand?) trend with a new record, I feel great.
The new top-secret triple-A-side Rebellion single is being mixed right now. It is some kind of crazy evil dance-rock shit like you will not believe. We love it. Dave Way has mixed singles from Macy Gray, Fiona Apple, the Spice Girls, Michael Jackson and Christina Aguilera. And Foo Fighters, and Paul McCartney. And now, the Rebellion. These tunes are gonna sparkle like glorious rock candy mountains!
Once the mix is complete, we will share one track with you in this space, and then we send everything off to the record plant and jump right into the next Rebellion single - returning to old-school rock n' roll in a huge way with a most unexpected producer (The Rebellion and a producer? What?!). And the nastiest song we have ever recorded: "The Morning Commute in G".
While all this other shit is going on, I'm preparing The Cutting-Room Floor for vinyl release (you thought that shit wasn't comin out!) and working on its follow-up, Failing Upwards, with an amazing band including the rhythm section of Tony Levin and Anton Fig. I know... I can't believe it, either.
There is another project cookin as well, called The Recording Party - where some old friends and I, who have become separated by many miles, will be collaborating via Internet on a monthly track. I can't wait to get going on our first installment!
Here comes tomorrow... Happy New Year!

Failing Upwards.
No holiday CD this year, I'm afraid - that you didn't get one is me, not you. My pattern of one year on, one year off continues.
I did begin work in earnest today on Failing Upwards, a collection of songs that has been simmering for a couple years now. These might be the best songs I've ever written, and to do them justice I've assembled a flat-out mindblowing band for the project. I'll spill more when the time is right.
Have a wonderful Christmas!
