Because an album
is more than just a collection of songs. It’s a feast
of art and information, an experience that begins when you scope out the nuances of the
cover art and continues as you flip it over in your hands to
read the song titles, unwrap it, open it for the first time
and put it on. Then, the music: the payoff that lets you know
you chose wisely, brings it all together and takes you someplace
awesome for an hour or so. The whole experience involves music,
lyrics, images, text, color, the feel of paper and cardboard...
and there are thousands of people out there who cherish it as
something downloads can’t replace any more than cable
television could replace going to the movies.
Eschatone Records is, simply, a label for people who appreciate
the whole experience of getting a new album.
That experience is the lone commodity record labels still have,
and most squander it playing catch-up with pirates and pandering to a jaded audience. The
entertainment industry has given up trying to sell entertainment
(much less art) and now peddles only the empty promise of eternal
youth, wealth and beauty.
We believe that there are plenty of people smart enough, experienced
enough, to know better. They want good records with all
the trimmings—and that’s what Eschatone stands for.
If all this sounds a little old-fashioned, well, the idea of
making and selling packaged musical recordings is old-fashioned.
In an age of free intellectual property and instant gratification,
the record business has become a boutique industry. Eschatone
embraces that status rather than trying to be things a label
can never be. Record companies make plastic circles and cardboard
squares; that is the essence of their product. It happens to
be a wonderful product, but now that major labels can’t
“move units” enough to justify all the mismanaged
money they waste, they’ve changed the focus by branding
their product as part of some imaginary glamorous lifestyle.
It’s like the majors have fallen victim to their own line:
convince yourself you are something you’re not.
At Eschatone, we pledge to stay true to what we are: fans and
performers of music. We pledge to bring to light as many great
and rewarding albums as we can find, in a host of genres from
folk to punk. We will strive to be both the most audience-friendly label
in the business, and the most artist-friendly. Our standard
artist agreement is one page. It’s the contract that we,
as artists ourselves, have always wished a label would offer.
And our catalog provides a spectrum of musical styles, textures
and experiences that we, as fans, are always eager to enjoy. |

Does
Eschatone accept demo submissions?
At this time we don't accept unsolicited demos, sorry.
What does "Eschatone" mean?
"Eschaton" is a term derived from the Greek eskhatos,
meaning the end of an age and (maybe, if we're lucky) the start
of a new one. We make music, hence the "e" on the
end.
Oh yeah—it's pronounced "es-ka-tone", not "eh-sha-tone". |
